Behold, I Am Doing a New Thing

Scripture:

ESV: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

NIV: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

NKJV: “Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.”

Understanding the Context

These verses are part of a larger section in Isaiah where God is speaking words of comfort and promise to the Israelites, who are facing the challenging reality of exile in Babylon. God has reminded them of His power and faithfulness in the past, particularly the Exodus from Egypt. However, in these verses, God shifts their focus from the past to the future, promising an even greater act of redemption and restoration.

"Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old"

This is not a command to forget history entirely, but rather an instruction not to be so fixated on past events, even great acts of God, that it prevents them from seeing what God is doing now and will do in the future. Their past, even with God's intervention, included failures and consequences (like exile). God is inviting them to move forward.

"Behold, I am doing a new thing"

This is a powerful declaration from God. He is not limited to His past actions; He is continually at work, initiating something fresh and unprecedented.

"now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?": God is actively doing this new thing now, and it's already beginning to appear, like a plant pushing through the soil. The question challenges them (and us) to be attentive and recognize God's work. Sometimes, we can be so focused on the past or our present difficulties that we miss what God is already starting to do.

"I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert"

This imagery is rich with meaning. The wilderness and desert represent places of difficulty, barrenness, and impossibility. God promises to create a path and provide life-giving water in the most unexpected and challenging circumstances. This speaks to His ability to bring hope, provision, and a way forward even when it seems impossible.

Applying This to Our Lives

Isaiah 43:18-19 has a powerful message of hope and transformation for us today:

  • Letting Go of the Past

We can sometimes be held captive by our past – by regrets, failures, disappointments, or even by clinging to past successes or "glory days." God calls us to release the former things and not let them define or limit our future.

  • Anticipating God's New Work

We should live with an expectancy that God is always doing something new. This isn't limited to grand, miraculous events; it can be new work in our hearts, our relationships, our circumstances, or in the world around us.

  • Cultivating Spiritual Awareness

The question "do you not perceive it?" challenges us to be spiritually awake and observant. Are we looking for God's hand at work? Are we open to seeing things differently? We need to ask God to open our eyes to perceive the new things He is doing.

  • Finding Hope in Impossible Situations

The promise of a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert is a powerful reminder that God can bring life and a way forward even in the most barren and difficult seasons of our lives. No situation is too impossible for Him.

  • Embracing Transformation God's "new thing" often involves transformation – in us and in our circumstances. It might require us to step out of our comfort zones and trust Him in unfamiliar territory.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who is always doing a new thing. Forgive us for the times we dwell on the past and fail to see the new work You are doing. Open our eyes and hearts to perceive what is springing forth now. We trust that You can make a way in our wilderness seasons and bring rivers of life to our deserts. Help us to let go of the former things and embrace the new thing You have for us, trusting in Your perfect timing and plan. Amen.

Additional Thoughts

Isaiah 43:18-19 is a beautiful picture of God's redemptive and transformative power. It encourages us to release the weight of the past and look forward with hope and anticipation to what God is doing and will continue to do. Let's pray for eyes to see and hearts to embrace the new things God is bringing forth in our lives and in the world, trusting that He can make a way and provide for us even in the most unexpected places.
