Ephesians 3:20-21
ESV: Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
NIV: Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
NKJV: Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Understanding the Context
Ephesians chapter 3 is where Paul talks about the amazing mystery of the gospel – that through Christ, both Jews and Gentiles are brought together into one body, the church. Right before these verses, Paul has been praying for the believers in Ephesus, asking God to strengthen them with power through the Spirit, that Christ would dwell in their hearts, and that they would grasp the incredible love of Christ. Then, he concludes this prayer with this powerful declaration of praise to God.
"Now to him who is able to do..."
This is a statement of God's incredible capability. Paul is emphasizing that God isn't limited in what He can do.
"Far more abundantly than all that we ask or think"
This phrase is packed with meaning. It tells us that God's power and ability go way beyond our prayers, our imaginations, and even our wildest dreams. We might ask for something big, or think of something even bigger, but God is able to do something far greater, overflowing with abundance.
"According to the power at work within us"
This incredible power of God isn't distant; it's actually at work in believers through the Holy Spirit! The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us.
"To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus"
The ultimate purpose of God's powerful work is His glory. This glory is seen and given to God within the community of believers (the church) and is centered in Christ Jesus.
"Throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
God's ability and His glory are not limited by time. They extend through history and into eternity.
Applying This to Our Lives
This passage is a tremendous source of encouragement and perspective for us:
Boldness in Prayer. Knowing that God is able to do far more than we can ask or think should encourage us to pray boldly and not limit God by our small expectations. We can bring our biggest concerns and deepest longings to Him, knowing His ability exceeds them.
Trust in God's Power Within Us. We don't have to rely on our own strength or abilities to face challenges or to live the Christian life. The same power that raised Christ is at work within us. This means we can trust God to work in and through us in ways we can't even imagine.
God's Plans Are Bigger. Our limited perspective can only see so much. But God's plans are infinitely bigger and better than anything we could come up with on our own. We can trust that He is working in ways we don't fully understand, for our good and His glory.
Living for God's Glory. The ultimate goal of God's work and our lives is His glory. This shifts our focus from our own accomplishments or desires to living in a way that brings honor and praise to God.
Hope for the Future. Knowing that God's power and glory extend throughout all generations gives us hope not only for our own lives but for the future of the church and the world.
Prayer
Almighty God,
We praise You because You are able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think. Thank You for the incredible power that is at work within us through Your Spirit. Forgive us for the times we limit You with our small thinking or lack of faith. Increase our faith and help us to pray with boldness. May our lives, both individually and as the church, bring glory to Your name in this generation and for all eternity. Amen.
Additional Thoughts
This verse is a wonderful reminder of the limitless nature of our God. We serve a God of abundant power and overflowing grace. It's easy to get discouraged by our limitations or the challenges we face, but Ephesians 3:20-21 lifts our eyes to a God who is bigger than it all. Let's dare to believe that God can do incredible things in our lives and in the world around us, things that go far beyond what we could ever ask or imagine, all for His glory.
