Isaiah 43:18-19
ESV: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
NIV: Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.1
NKJV: “Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.
This passage comes in the midst of Isaiah's prophecies of comfort and restoration for Israel. God, speaking through Isaiah, is reminding His people not to dwell on the past, particularly their failures and the hardships they have endured. Instead, He encourages them to look forward to the new thing He is doing, a fresh start and a new beginning.
The imagery of making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert speaks of God's power to bring life and abundance where there was once barrenness and difficulty. He is promising to do something unprecedented and miraculous, transforming the landscape of their lives.
Application
Let go of the past: As you begin a new year, release any regrets, failures, or hurts from the past. Don't allow them to hold you back from experiencing the new things God has in store for you.
Embrace new beginnings: God is doing a new thing in your life. Be open to new opportunities, new relationships, and new ways of experiencing His love and grace.
Trust in God's provision: Even when you face challenges or uncertainties, trust that God will make a way for you. He can create paths where there seem to be none and bring life to dry and barren places.
Perceive God's work: Be attentive to the ways God is working in your life. Don't miss the signs of His activity and the new things He is bringing forth.
This passage is a powerful reminder that God is a God of new beginnings. He is always at work, creating, restoring, and making all things new.
May this verse inspire you to embrace the new things God has in store for you in this new year!
