Dress code: Garment of Love

Scripture: Colossians 3:14

ESV:
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

NIV:
And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

NKJV:
But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

OJB (Orthodox Jewish Bible):
And to all these things add ahavah, which is the agudah of tamimim.

Greek NT:
ἐπὶ πᾶσιν δὲ τούτοις τὴν ἀγάπην, ὅ ἐστιν σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος.

Understanding the Context

In Colossians 3, the Apostle Paul utilizes a vivid "getting dressed" metaphor. He instructs his readers to strip away "old clothes"—destructive behaviors like anger and greed—and instead "put on" a new nature characterized by compassion and patience. Verse 14 introduces the final, unifying piece of this spiritual wardrobe. To understand how this works, we look at the specific terms used in the original languages:

  • “Love” — Strong's G26 (agapē) / Strong's H160 (ahavah):

In the Greek text, this is the noun ἀγάπην (agapēn). In the OJB, it is the Hebrew noun אַהֲבָה (ahăḇâ). While the root verb 'āhaḇ (H157) describes the act of loving, the noun H160 ahăḇâ represents the concept of love itself—a deliberate choice of loyalty and devotion that acts as the "outer garment" defining a person's character.

  • “Bond” — Strong's G4886 (syndesmos) / Strong's H92 (aguddah):

The Greek word is σύνδεσμος (syndesmos), referring to a ligament in the body or a "bundle-band." In the OJB, it is the Hebrew אֲגֻדָּה (ăḡudâ), which describes a band, a knot, or a group tied together. Without this "ligament," individual virtues like patience or humility would simply fall away or become disjointed.

  • “Perfection / Wholeness” — Strong's G5047 (teleiotēs) / Strong's H8549 (tamimim):

This refers to maturity or reaching an intended end-goal. The Greek text uses τελειότητος (teleiotētos). The OJB uses תְּמִימִים (tamimim), the plural/complete form of תָּמִים (tāmîm), which points to that which is whole, complete, or upright. Love is the force that pulls the individual pieces of character into a state of total wholeness.

Applying This in Our Lives

This passage provides a practical, structural framework for anyone focused on building a lasting legacy, whether in their family or their business. It reminds us that while being highly disciplined and wise is essential, these traits can easily become cold or rigid if they aren't held together by love. Love serves as the "ligament," or syndesmos (G4886), that ensures our individual strengths serve a purpose far higher than ourselves. We often measure maturity by the skills we master or the financial milestones we hit, but true completeness—teleiotēs (G5047)—is ultimately relational. If professional success comes at the cost of broken bridges, that success remains fundamentally incomplete. This is why choosing to "wear" love is an intentional, daily decision. Just as we carefully select our attire for a critical meeting or a training session, we must consciously decide to bring love into every interaction. In an increasingly fragmented world, this commitment becomes the unifying force that brings diverse people and conflicting goals into a state of tamimim (H8549), or true harmony.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the "garment" of Love. We confess that we often try to practice patience or kindness in our own strength, only to find them falling apart under pressure. Today, we choose to "put on" Your love. May it be the אֲגֻדָּה (aguddah - bond) that holds our lives together and brings us into true maturity and תְּמִימִים (tamimim - wholeness). Let everything we do—every decision, every training session, and every conversation—be bound together in Your perfect harmony. Amen.

Additional Thoughts

Think of an architectural arch. You can have many strong stones—discipline, honesty, courage—but they will not stand as a functional structure until the keystone is placed at the top center.

Love is that keystone. Without it, the "stones" of character are just a pile of good intentions. With it, you become a bridge that others can cross. Ensure your keystone is in place today.
