Not Ashamed of the Gospel

Scripture: Romans 1:16

  • ESV: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  • NIV: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

  • NKJV: For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Understanding the Context

This powerful verse serves as the thesis statement for the entire book of Romans. Paul is writing to the believers in Rome, the sophisticated capital of the Roman Empire, a city filled with diverse philosophies, religions, and immense political power. He has just expressed his eagerness to preach the gospel there (Romans 1:15). Verse 16 is his bold declaration of confidence in the message he carries, explaining precisely why he is eager and unashamed, despite how foolish or weak the message of a crucified Messiah might appear to the world.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel”

Paul declares his unwavering confidence and boldness regarding the "good news." In a Roman context that valued power, status, and worldly wisdom, the gospel message could easily be seen as shameful or foolish. Paul emphatically rejects this perspective.

“for it is the power of God for salvation”

This is the reason for his confidence. The gospel is not merely a set of ideas or a philosophy; it is the active, dynamic “power of God” (dunamis, where we get 'dynamite') working to bring about “salvation.” It's God's effective means of rescuing people from sin, death, and judgment.

“to everyone who believes”

This highlights the universal accessibility and the condition for receiving this salvation. It is not limited by ethnicity, social status, or background; it is available to “everyone.” The requirement is simply “believes”—faith, trust, and reliance on Christ.

“to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
Paul acknowledges the historical order of God's redemptive plan (salvation came through the Jewish people), but emphasizes that the gospel's power and availability now extend equally to the Gentiles ("the Greek," representing all non-Jews).

Applying This to Our Lives

Romans 1:16 is a foundational truth that should shape our confidence and witness.

  • Confidence in the Gospel: We need never be ashamed of the good news about Jesus. It is not an outdated myth or a weak philosophy; it is the very power of God designed to save souls. This should fuel our boldness in sharing it.

  • Reliance on God's Power: Our effectiveness in sharing the gospel or living the Christian life comes not from our eloquence or clever arguments, but from the inherent power within the gospel message itself, activated by the Holy Spirit.

  • Universality of the Message: The gospel is for everyone. This challenges any prejudice or hesitation we might have in sharing God's love with people from different backgrounds or lifestyles.

  • The Simplicity of Faith: Salvation comes to "everyone who believes." This reminds us of the beautiful simplicity of the gospel – it is received by faith, not earned by works.

  • Motivation for Witness: Understanding the gospel as God's power for salvation should motivate us to share it, knowing it holds the only true hope for eternal life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge the truth of Proverbs 16:9. We bring our plans and desires before You today. As we plan our way, we humbly ask that You would establish and direct our steps according to Your perfect purpose. Grant us wisdom in our planning and peace in knowing that You are ultimately in control. Guide us, Lord, in the way You would have us go. Amen.

Additional Thoughts

Proverbs 16:9 offers a beautiful balance between human responsibility and divine sovereignty. We are called to be diligent planners, using the minds God gave us, but ultimate peace comes from resting in His sovereign control over the outcome. When we commit our plans to Him (Proverbs 16:3) and trust His direction, we can walk forward with confidence, knowing He is establishing our steps.
