Scripture
ESV: If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
NIV: Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
NKJV: If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
Understanding the Context
This verse is found within the account of Jesus washing His disciples' feet during the Last Supper, shortly before His crucifixion. This act was deeply symbolic and counter-cultural. In that time, washing feet was a task performed by the lowest servants. By performing this humble service Himself, Jesus was providing a powerful object lesson for His disciples. He is not just performing a ritual; He is demonstrating the nature of true leadership and love in His kingdom.
"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet"
Jesus emphasizes His position and authority ("Lord and Teacher") to highlight the significance of His action. If the One they recognized as Lord and Teacher was willing to perform such a humble task, it underscored the importance of the lesson.
"you also ought to wash one another’s feet"
This is Jesus' direct instruction and the core of the lesson. The "ought" signifies a moral obligation, a duty that flows from their relationship with Him and His example. While some interpret this literally as a religious ordinance, the broader and primary meaning is about embodying a spirit of humble service towards one another.
Applying This to Our Lives
Jesus' act of foot washing and His instruction in John 13:14 have profound implications for how we live as His followers today:
Embracing Humility
Jesus redefined greatness by demonstrating profound humility. He showed us that true leadership and love involve being willing to take the lowest place and serve others, even in ways that might seem undignified by worldly standards. We are called to cultivate this same attitude of humility in our interactions with one another.
Serving One Another
The command to "wash one another's feet" is a call to active, tangible service within the Christian community. It means looking for ways to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, even when it's messy, inconvenient, or goes unnoticed. This service flows from the love Christ has shown us.
Following Jesus' Example
Jesus explicitly states that He gave us an example to follow. Our lives as disciples should be marked by the same selfless, humble service that He demonstrated. We are not above doing what our Lord did.
A Characteristic of True Discipleship
Jesus later says that the world will know we are His disciples by our love for one another (John 13:35). This love is tangibly expressed through humble service, like washing feet.
Ongoing Attitude
The foot washing wasn't just a one-time event; it represents an ongoing attitude of humility and service that should characterize our lives. We should habitually look for opportunities to serve others with a servant's heart.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for the powerful and humbling example You set by washing Your disciples' feet. You, our Lord and Teacher, showed us what it truly means to serve. Help us to follow Your example and cultivate an attitude of humble service. Show us practical ways we can "wash one another's feet" by meeting the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. May our lives be marked by the same selfless love and humility that You demonstrated, so that others may see You in us. Amen.
Additional Thoughts
The image of Jesus, the Son of God, kneeling to wash dusty, dirty feet is a powerful and enduring picture of humble love. It challenges our natural inclination towards pride and self-centeredness. John 13:14 is a call to action for every believer to embody that same spirit of service in our relationships within the body of Christ. It's not about earning favor, but about reflecting the heart of our Lord who came not to be served, but to serve.
