Scripture
Proverbs 15:1 (ESV) - "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
Reflection
Let's face it, no one enjoys being criticized. Whether it's a harsh comment from a boss, a negative performance review, or a complaint from a client, criticism can sting. It can trigger defensiveness, anger, and even discouragement. But as Christians, we're called to respond to criticism differently.
Proverbs offers us wise counsel: "A soft answer turns away wrath." When faced with criticism, our first instinct might be to fire back, to justify ourselves, or to get angry. But a gentle, humble response can often disarm the situation and open the door to productive dialogue.
This doesn't mean we have to agree with the criticism or pretend that it doesn't hurt. But it does mean choosing our words carefully, listening with an open mind, and seeking to understand the other person's perspective. Even if the criticism is unfair or delivered in a harsh way, a soft answer can de-escalate the situation and prevent it from spiraling into conflict.
Remember, criticism can also be an opportunity for growth. If there's truth in the feedback, we can use it to learn, improve, and become even better at what we do.
Declaration
I respond to criticism with grace and humility.
I listen with an open mind and seek to understand the other person's perspective.
I use criticism as an opportunity for growth and improvement.
Stewardship Question
How do I typically respond to criticism? Am I quick to defend myself, or am I able to listen and learn?
Prayer
"Lord, help me to respond to criticism in a way that honors you. Grant me wisdom to discern truth from error, and humility to accept correction when needed. May my response be characterized by grace and understanding. Amen."
Plan
If you receive criticism today, take a deep breath before responding. Listen carefully, seek to understand the other person's perspective, and choose your words with kindness and respect. Even if the criticism is difficult to hear, ask God to help you use it as an opportunity for growth.
