Scripture:
Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) - "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Reflection
The marketplace is a place of constant communication. From a casual chat at the coffee machine to a high-stakes negotiation or a difficult conversation with a colleague, our words are a powerful tool. In a world where negative talk, gossip, and criticism can easily become the default, we are called to a higher standard. Proverbs 18:21 offers a profound truth: our words carry the power of life and death. The tone we set, the encouragement we offer, and the truth we speak can either build up or tear down, bringing life to a situation or draining it of hope.
This is not a call to ignore problems or be insincere; rather, it is a call to intentionality. Ephesians 4:29 further guides us, saying, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
For employees, this means using your words to affirm a colleague's hard work, to speak truth with grace, to offer encouragement in a difficult situation, and to avoid participating in gossip. Your positive, life-giving words can be a light in a dark office. For business owners and leaders, the power of your spoken word is even greater. Your words can cast vision, inspire confidence, affirm value in your employees, and create a culture where people feel safe and respected. By choosing words of life, we fulfill our calling as Marketplace Ministers, stewarding our communication for God’s glory and the good of those around us.
Declaration (Repeat daily if possible):
I use my words to bring life and encouragement.
I speak truth in love, building up those around me.
My tongue is a tool for God's grace in the marketplace.
Stewardship Question:
Am I using my words today to build up my colleagues and create a positive environment, or am I allowing unwholesome talk to be part of my professional interactions?
Prayer
"Heavenly Father, I pray for a renewed awareness of the power of my words. Set a guard over my mouth and help me to choose my words carefully. May everything I say today be a source of encouragement, life, and grace to those who hear it. Let my words reflect Your heart and build a culture of honor in my workplace. Amen."
Action Plan:
Listen First: This week, practice active listening in your conversations. Take a moment before you respond to ensure your words are helpful and encouraging.
Positive Affirmation: Find one person at work whom you can intentionally affirm this week. Be specific and genuine in your praise.
Gossip Filter: Before participating in a conversation that veers toward gossip, quietly redirect the conversation or simply step away, choosing not to use your words to tear others down.
